The Power of Hypnotherapy for Lasting Change
Rochelle Bates uses clinical hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis techniques with clients of all ages—from children as young as 4 to adults navigating life’s complexities. Hypnosis works by accessing the subconscious mind, where our deepest patterns and beliefs reside, allowing for profound and lasting transformation.
Through this gentle yet powerful approach, clients experience reduced anxiety and stress, improved sleep quality, effective pain management, and enhanced emotional resilience. Hypnotherapy also plays a vital role in supporting recovery from both acute and chronic illnesses by helping the mind and body work together in the healing process, reducing treatment-related anxiety, and promoting overall wellness during challenging health journeys.
Whether you’re preparing for childbirth, managing hormonal transitions, recovering from trauma, dealing with health challenges, or simply seeking better daily wellness, hypnotherapy creates a pathway to positive change that feels natural and sustainable.
Rochelle Bates is a clinical hypnotherapist, Mongan Method HypnoBirthing educator, and mindfulness meditation instructor dedicated to supporting women throughout their entire health journey—from fertility and birth through perimenopause, menopause and beyond.

HypnoBirthing is a technique for achieving a positive, calm and stress-free birth by practicing self hypnosis and breath work, and it’s a superb birth preparation class.
When giving birth with HypnoBirthing, a birthing person is not in a trance or asleep but instead in a state of deep relaxation—awake, aware, and fully in control.
The deep levels of relaxation you’ll experience through self-hypnosis allow parents to eliminate the fear that causes tension and pain. The breath work supports your body during each phase of birth, leading to shorter contractions and shorter birth overall, and the childbirth education and advocacy skills you learn in the virtual HypnoBirthing course help you to birth with confidence and greater comfort.

It can make birth pain-free, yes: HypnoBirthing helps you achieve both modulation and reduction in pain, and by reducing fear and tension, helps you manage the entire process of birth better.
The techniques and mind-set of HypnoBirthing allows parents to perceive the sensations of birth differently. They may never experience sensations of pain, and they absolutely do experience the sensations of birth differently than a non-HypnoBirthing person. This is achieved through the repetition of the relaxation techniques, using breath to assist the physiological process of birth – helping, not fighting with your body – and the elimination of fear, the greatest cause of tension and pain.
When giving birth with HypnoBirthing, a mother is not in a trance or asleep but instead in a state of deep relaxation—awake, aware, and fully in control– a very mindful and comfortable state.

While HypnoBirthing is a natural form of childbirth education, it is not an either/or program. While most HypnoBirthing parents do not desire or use medication or adjunctive birth procedures, they certainly can and do, as warranted and as recommended by their birth providers. The virtual HypnoBirthing class prepares you so well for any turn birth may take that you’ll be able to understand and competently decide for yourself if, when and how you’d like to make decisions regarding birth intervention. You’ll have the information and ability to advocate and choose for yourselves, regardless of where you birth.

It is recommended that parents start a virtual HypnoBirthing class between 20-30 weeks to have the time to take the 5 week, 3 hour a week class and finish before birth, and to allow enough time to become proficient in the relaxation and breath techniques.
Every day of practicing the HypnoBirthing techniques gives you and your developing baby both superb stress management and wonderful calming hormone exposure, which is irreplaceable. I am one of the few HypnoBirthing educators who regularly teaches parents who find out about HypnoBirthing later, very close to birth. It’s never too late to get benefit (if you haven’t given birth!), and I support these clients usually as a doula, as well, as they’ve had a short period in which to prepare. I’ve had parents begin the virtual HypnoBirthing course as late as 38 weeks; starting at 20 weeks is much more beneficial.

Yes! This is one of the most exciting and often surprising aspects of HypnoBirthing for parents. A partner or birth companion attends all the classes, together with the birthing mother. While a Birth Partner has traditionally had a very minor role in birth, or may have been shut out of the process entirely, HypnoBirthing provides Birth Companions with an integral role in birthing as an educated, consulted and necessary advocate and support throughout pregnancy and birth, often changing (for the better) how partners see each other and enriching their relationship in countless ways. It’s an honor and a privilege to serve as a Birth Partner, and HypnoBirthing celebrates this unique role!

The great thing about HypnoBirthing is that it teaches self hypnosis. You are guiding your own relaxation and path to deep calm. As the exercises progress, the birth partner will learn to “deepen” that state of relaxation and help the birthing person to go deeper within the calm state you’ve already learned. It’s gentle and never forced, and always effective.
Because you’ve asked, though, I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist (not all HypnoBirthing educators are, and they don’t need to be) and have never met a person I could not hypnotize, and I’m always available to answer questions or assist with hypnosis. Those who believe that they can’t be hypnotized usually have some of the deepest, most relaxing experiences when they learn HypnoBirthing techniques.

You’ll be prepared for all types of birth situations, planned, and unplanned. This is not a one-size-fits-all program and your birth is first and always guided by you and your baby, your birthing body, and your birth preferences.

HypnoBirthing also helps you learn how to ask for and get the very best support from the birthing providers you’ve chosen, even if they have no experience with a HypnoBirthing birth.

The virtual HypnoBirthing course is a wonderful program for parents who are looking for harm reduction and trauma-informed care. Many students have prior traumatic birth experiences, and many desire a VBAC (Vaginal birth after Cesarean). Some are fearful of birth, often associating it with negative prior births or excruciating pain. This causes bodies to tense, stress, and become unable to perform what should be (in most cases) a normal physiological function. HypnoBirthing teaches, through the in-class hypnosis, self hypnosis, and affirmation exercises, how you can release prior emotions that lead to pain-causing fear and resistant muscles. All of my students who’ve experienced prior birth trauma report greater confidence and a freeing sense of accomplishment they never imagined prior to their HypnoBirthing birth, and all of my students thus far who’ve desired a VBAC were able to achieve it!
